Saddleworth in Lockdown

These Saddleworth images were taken during the Covid 19 outbreak at weekends around the villages of Saddleworth. Saddleworth and particularly Uppermill have a vibrant nightlife with many people enjoying the various pubs in the evenings. These images really are a stark contrast to the ‘normal’ weekend night in the area.

I’m lucky enough to be able to shoot a lot of my photography in and around Saddleworth. This shoot was for Olivia Jade, a talented make up artist. This fashion shoot was at Dovestones Nature Reserve and was inspired by the film ‘Where the wild things are’.

The brief was natural images to go with the natural understated make up (natural make up is hard to do). I used the natural light supplemented by flash. It was a winters day and quite dull so I used the flash to bring a bit of pop to the images. I employ the backlighting technique quite often. We have to replicate the sun here in Manchester. This technique involves flash units with one to the rear with a warm orange gel on to give that lovely warm feeling.

Jasmin the middle was brilliant too, its good to work with talented models, to be honest it makes my job a lot more easy.

Head Shot Photography Manchester

I have been shooting a lot of head shot photography just recently. I do like it when we can get away from the plain background studio type shot like this head shot for Linkedin. Headshots like this are always a bit more natural. I do shoot studio head shots, scroll down for examples and se which fits your brief better.

Architectural Photography Manchester

I have pleasure of living and working in a lovely artistic part of Saddleworth. Just a few doors up from my base is the newly opened fantastic Weavers Gallery. Check out their website and if you are anywhere near the area drop in, you won’t be disappointed, they have constantly changing shows and a great selection of quality quirky gifts.

An email popped into my inbox recently from a new gents vintage clothing stockist. David who runs Common Ilk wanted some quality creative fashion photography of his stock for online sales and to populate his new website. He wanted a clean but vintage look. David has a keen eye for detail, hence his amazing stock of quality vintage menswear.

Creative Fashion Photography Manchester

Common Ilk is a new business and he needs a high quality website to show of his wares so we hatched a plan for a shoot to populate his website with creative fashion photography.  To keep the costs down we orchestrated the day well. It was a days work to shoot and edit, at the end of it I delivered 80 images. Not expensive at all for how his website looks is it? HERE it is.

Thank’s also to the great models Jim and also Jake from the band “The Darling Club”.

Sometimes when you look at an image you have no idea how much work has gone into it. Why should you just so long as it’s a good architectural image, so I though I’d describe how and why I took this image.

This is one architectural image from a series I took of a house that had been up for sale for quite a while without selling. It’s quite an expensive house so the owners though that spending £200 on professional photographs to help sell their house was a good prospect . It worked too, within a few weeks of the photos going online the house had sold.

Just this one image is 5 images compiled together. Parts of the kitchen were very bright and others very dark. For example on the viewers side of the island it was very dark so this is lit with a flash. On the other side of the kitchen where the windows are it was very bright this needed to be a completely different exposure, as with the room at the side this needed lighting with flash. All these images are then balanced and put together to create one evenly lit pleasing image.

This was done in all rooms of the house (not so many images comped together) and this presented a lovely looking well lit house.

Recently Oldham Library hosted a great Cos Play event. I photographed the event for them and had the idea of setting up a studio for the participants to visit. My idea was to use an old masters background and light the subjects in a fairly low key way. The background was a bit of a risk I guess but I really wanted a contrast from the colourful modern characters, I’m pleased to say it really paid off and not the images are printed as large aluminium images, its the first thing you see as you enter Oldham Gallery and Library and they really do look the business.
